Using Nodes like database Rows

San Diego Drupal User Group - Mon, 03/08/2010 - 16:24

I promise, I'll stop beating this dead horse once I really understand how dead it is. Promise.

To me, Content Types are like SQL Tables, and Nodes are like SQL Rows. Using the Views module affirms that as I can/do query Drupal content like I would in SQL. Next step is processing data as such.

Does anyone have any suggestions or examples of processing a node of one Content Type based on the data in another (related/referenced) Content Type? I can think of some similar modules, but I'm hoping there's a more straightforward example.

Here's a scenario:

  • Content Type 1: "Test Response" with single Answer Value
  • Content Type 2: "Answer Key" (one node for each possible answer) with "Correct? (Yes/No)" field

I want to process my Test Responses to see if the Answer Value is correct, then store the result in the Test Response. After wrestling with this mind problem, I think this is the approach I want to take. It is, at least, the problem I want to solve.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

View Database info in a Node as a (modifiable?) table

San Diego Drupal User Group - Mon, 03/08/2010 - 14:43

Hey, all. Looking for clues. You may remember me as the guy trying to reconcile Drupal with relational databases. Getting there, but I need more help.

I'd like to expose some database table/query information in a node/view. Say I have a list of States. It makes sense to me to have a SQL table with States instead of: a) a node per state, or b) a multi-value text field with 50 values.

Further, as States are so simplistic, there may be tables that have a bit more data, but I'd prefer managing them as a whole in a table or spreadsheet view. It'd be great to be able to do that in Drupal rather than go outside the site.

Any ideas?

I've played with Migrate, which helps imports, but is less helpful for maintenance within the site. I can see using Views for display, but less for edits. Also, would most people make States into "one node per state" anyway? That seems soooo heavy.

Thanks in advance.
